Reflecting on a Lost Life - Mine
Reflecting on Memories: A Journey Through Loss and Resilience

As I slip into a familiar shirt, a relic from my past, I’m transported to crisp autumn mornings spent running along sun-dappled paths. That shirt, once my comforting companion, was perfect for those late fall jogs—it kept me warm while drawing the sweat from my skin. Now, however, I find myself wearing it on a cold day while sitting in a wheelchair, flooded with memories that are as poignant as they are painful. Each time I wear that shirt, I’m reminded of who I was and the vibrant lifestyle I once led—a stark contrast to the reality I face today.
The losses I’ve experienced weigh heavily on my heart. I’ve lost my home, my career, my leg and the life I once knew. Sometimes, I look around at the people who share this space with me and wonder about their histories. Many have been here for over a decade, and while I know them now, I am curious about who they were before their lives took an unexpected turn. There are snippets of stories shared, tales told by those who can reminisce about their pasts. They speak of lives filled with different dreams and aspirations, and I find myself intrigued by the differences in our experiences.
Being one of the youngest in this environment, I often reflect on how much has changed over the past 20 or 30 years. Attitudes, societal roles, and even career paths have evolved dramatically. Those shifts create a chasm between my past and my present—the person I was versus the person I have become.
The memories I carry are not just remnants of joy, but also reminders of what I’ve lost. They’re intricately woven into the fabric of my identity, both challenging and comforting. As I navigate this new chapter, I struggle to reconcile my former life with my current reality.
The question looms large, how do I overcome the life I once lived? How do I find a sense of peace in a world where everything feels altered? I confess, I don’t have the answers. But I know that by sharing these thoughts, I’m taking a small step toward understanding my journey.
Life is filled with unexpected turns, and as I continue to explore my memories, I remain hopeful that I can find new meaning in the space I now occupy. It may not be easy, but perhaps in the process of remembrance, I can also discover resilience.
This is just the beginning of my story and hopefully more chapters await, filled with memories yet to be made.

Sharron: your mom and I have come to know you since that night you stepped off the rung of a stepladder after changing a light bulb. The resulting shattered knee was the beginning of the present journey. You have described your present physical condition and looked ahead at what is to come.
The goal is for you to be independent , in your own apartment with the ability to move about in the world outside.
We are amazed at the focus and determination you exhibit every day.
Congratulations on what you have created here, we are so very proud.
