Charity Begins at Home

I do love a good play on words and it’s often said that charity begins at home, and I’ve witnessed the truth in that saying through my parents’ remarkable actions. Recently, they went out of their way to support my home by reaching out to an organization they are involved with, hoping to raise a few hundred dollars for essential items needed by those around us.

When that funding fell through, they didn’t let that deter them. Instead, they decided to dig into their own pockets to purchase a few vital supplies such as hand creams, shampoos, conditioners, toothpaste, and toothbrushes even though they are on a fixed income. While these items might seem small, they can profoundly impact the lives of many residents in our area. Too often, people have to settle for medicinal-grade products that, while effective, are far from pleasant.

My parents dedicated their time to gather these essentials, and I made sure that what they collected was delivered directly to a trusted personal support worker (PSW) who could distribute them to those in need. This small act of kindness reinforced the idea that even the tiniest gestures can create a ripple effect of positive change.

As the saying goes, “It takes a village.” I’d like to extend this sentiment to you. If you’re in the area of a home near you and feel inspired to contribute, consider dropping off some personal care items for residents who could really use a boost. This simple gesture could mean the world to someone who may not have family or friends visiting them regularly. And this is how you could really contribute, by volunteering your time and visiting those that do not have anyone. Just something to consider.

While I don’t have specific statistics on how many individuals in long-term care lack a support network, I suspect the numbers are quite staggering. It’s a subject I’ve flagged to explore further.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Every small effort counts, and you never know how much of a difference you can make in someone else’s life! Let’s reach out and show our community some love.
